Do Pets Reincarnate?
How Animal Souls Find Us Again
If you’ve ever loved an animal deeply, chances are you’ve wondered where they go when they leave us. Do pets reincarnate? Do they stay with us in spirit? Do they move on to something else? Can they come back?
And there’s another question I find even more fascinating: Have they been with us before?
I believe they have.
For me, this isn’t only a spiritual concept I’ve read about. My own experiences, both personally and through the work I do with others, have shown me that the relationships we have with our animals are much bigger than one physical lifetime.
My relationship with Molly is a perfect example.

When Molly Started Visiting My Dreams
Molly died in 2013, two years before my spiritual awakening began with the death of my dad in 2015.
But looking back, I know Molly was part of the story. Before my dad died, she started showing up in my dreams. At the time, I didn't know anything about animal communication, spirit guides, reincarnation, or most of what would eventually become such a huge part of my life. I thought I was dreaming about a dog I loved and missed. I know differently now!
Those dreams were little nudges from the spiritual world before I was ready to understand what they meant. I like to imagine my spiritual team watching all of this unfold and eventually saying, “Okay, she's not getting it. We're going to have to give her something that really makes her question everything.” And they did.
My dad's death in 2015 became the biggest catalyst for my spiritual awakening. Suddenly, the world was much bigger than I had understood it to be, and experiences I had previously dismissed started making sense.
Molly had already been reaching me. I just didn't know how to recognize it. Years later, I would discover that our connection went even further back than this lifetime.
A Wolf From Another Lifetime
Eventually, my spiritual journey led me to animal communication, something I hadn't even known existed when Molly was alive.
During one reading, an animal communicator described seeing me in another lifetime as a warrior-looking person. I don't remember whether she saw me as male or female, but she saw me running alongside a wolf. That wolf was Molly.
Suddenly, another piece fell into place. Molly wasn't only a dog I had loved in this lifetime who continued connecting with me after she died. We had known each other before.
The animals who become part of our lives aren't always meeting us for the first time. Some of these relationships stretch across lifetimes, with the same souls finding one another again in different bodies, different places, and different roles.
Molly and I had already found each other before and we weren't finished.
Then Came Waffles

Through animal communication, Molly told me that she would come back to me.
There was also one oddly specific detail: she said she would love milk.
Then Waffles came into my life.
And, sure enough, Waffles loves anything involving milk. Every time I make one of my tea lattes, he appears hoping I'll give him a little bit of the milk foam off the top. And like most dogs, he's never going to turn down a good Pup Cup!
It's a small detail, but knowing what Molly had told me before Waffles came along made it stand out.
Later, I learned something that helped me understand the connection even more. Molly is part of Waffles, but Waffles isn't entirely Molly.
At first, that can sound confusing. We often think of reincarnation in a linear way. Someone lives, dies, reincarnates into another body, lives that life, dies again, and continues the cycle.
But that's not how I understand the soul.
Our Entire Soul Doesn't Incarnate at Once
Our souls are much greater than the portion of consciousness experiencing this physical lifetime.
When we incarnate, our entire soul doesn't squeeze itself into one human or animal body. An aspect of our consciousness incarnates while the greater soul continues to exist beyond the physical. Understanding that completely changed the way I thought about Molly and Waffles. Molly can be part of Waffles without Waffles simply being Molly in a different body.
This is an important distinction because Waffles is absolutely Waffles!
He has his own personality, his own quirks, his own relationships, and his own experience here. I'm not looking at him and seeing Molly 2.0. I'm experiencing my relationship with Waffles for exactly what it is while also understanding that part of Molly's soul is connected to him.
Molly can be present through Waffles and continue existing in spirit at the same time.
Those two things don't contradict each other.
Different Souls, Different Roles
One of the things I love most about understanding our animals this way is realizing that they aren't all here to do the same thing.
I've learned through animal communication that Molly continues to help me with my work from the spiritual world, while Waffles helps me here in the physical world. I love that distinction!
Molly is still part of what I'm doing. Her physical life ended, but our relationship didn't. She continues working with me from the other side while Waffles is here beside me, helping me navigate this physical life.
And then there's Misty. Chaotic, wonderful Misty.

Her job is completely different. She's here to remind me to have more fun and break a few rules.
Honestly, if you knew Misty, that tracks!
Our animals aren't interchangeable companions who all show up for the same reason. They have their own personalities, their own souls, and their own roles within our lives.
One can ground us in the physical world. Another can continue working alongside us from the spiritual world. Another can crash into our carefully organized existence and remind us that life isn't supposed to be taken quite so seriously.
The relationships we have with our animals are every bit as individual and complex as the relationships we have with people. Those relationships don't begin or end with one lifetime.
Our Animals Appear in Our Past Lives, Too
My experiences with Molly and Waffles aren't the only reason I know animals travel with us through different lifetimes.
I've experienced it in my work as a Past Life Regression hypnotherapist, too.
During one client's regression, their dog (in spirit) appeared in another lifetime as an Irish wolfhound. Their dog wasn't the same breed or living the same life. The physical form had changed, but the soul connection hadn't.

We already understand this concept when we talk about human soul relationships. A spouse in this lifetime can have been a sibling, parent, friend, child, or completely different relationship in another lifetime. Our roles change, our bodies change, and our circumstances change. Our animals are no different.
The little dog curled up next to you today didn't necessarily look anything like that when you knew each other before. They could have been another breed, an animal who played an entirely different role in your life...or a completely different species.
The physical form changes, but the soul connection continues.
The Soul Doesn't Have a Species
Here's something else that I find fascinating about reincarnation. Our souls aren't limited to experiencing life as the same species. I've experienced a past life as a cat myself!

I also know two mediums whose dog revealed through animal communication that he had been a psychologist in a previous lifetime. Yes, a human psychologist!
We often think about reincarnation as moving from one human lifetime to another, or an animal returning as another animal. But souls aren't restricted to one type of physical experience.
A human soul can experience life as an animal, and an animal soul can experience life as a human. Each incarnation gives us an entirely different perspective on the physical world, from how we communicate and form relationships to how we experience our surroundings.
Think about how different life as a cat would be from life as a human. The instincts, senses, relationships, and daily experiences are completely different, yet each offers its own opportunities for growth and understanding.
Our physical bodies are temporary experiences. Our souls are so much more than the forms they take.
Why Do Pets Reincarnate?
When people talk about reincarnation, there's often a lot of emphasis on karma, lessons, soul contracts, and unfinished business. Those things are part of our soul experiences, but I don't believe every reunion happens because something needs to be fixed.
Souls also choose one another because they love one another. An animal can return because there is more companionship to experience together. They can come back to support us through another chapter, protect us, help us grow, bring us joy, or take on an entirely different role than they had before. The relationship itself can also evolve.
A wolf who once ran beside you can become the dog who shares your home. A beloved dog who leaves the physical world can continue helping you from spirit while part of that soul experiences physical life with you again.
The form isn't what makes the relationship. The soul does.
Have You Known Your Animal Before?
Some animals enter our lives and feel familiar immediately. You look into their eyes and recognize something you can't explain. The bond forms quickly, or they arrive during such a specific chapter of your life that their presence feels anything but accidental.
There are animals we meet and love and then there are animals we recognize.

Once I understood my own connection with Molly, I started looking at those relationships very differently.
Instead of only asking, “Will my pet come back to me?” there's another question I think is even more interesting: “How many times have we already found each other?”
Your "fur baby" may not be a new relationship at all. You may have loved or protected each other before. Or, you may have traveled together through a completely different place and time, in bodies that looked nothing like the ones you have today. They may have already left this physical world and still be working beside you. They may return in another form while still remaining connected to you in spirit.
Our animals aren't only part of our lives, they're part of our soul journeys.
Sometimes, when we meet them in this life, we may not be saying hello for the first time; we may be saying, "Hey, old friend. It's good to see you again."
